Postdoctoral Scholar Program

Definition of a Postdoctoral Scholar:

  • The appointee is a recent recipient (typically, no more than two years prior) of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or related field.
  • The length of appointment may vary up to a maximum of three years.
  • Postdoctoral appointments are temporary; at the end of their appointment, postdoctoral scholars are expected to move to a regular academic or research position.

Characteristics of a Postdoctoral Scholar Appointment:

  • A postdoctoral scholar appointment involves full-time engagement in research and project participation under the supervision and guidance of members of the group to which the postdoctoral scholar has been appointed.
  • A postdoctoral scholar appointment "is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic and/or research career" (Association of American Universities, Committee on Postdoctoral Education -- Reports and Recommendation, March 31, 1998
  • "The appointee has the freedom, and is expected, to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the period of the appointment." (ibid).
  • A postdoctoral scholar will participate in all activities and meetings of the research group, except for recruitment and personnel-related meetings.


Postdoctoral Opportunities

We are currently looking to hire Postdoctoral Scholars in the field of computer science. Candidates should be able to utilize advanced scientific and technical knowledege as would normally be obtained through graduate study, as well as display originality and inventiveness. They must exhibit superior scientific proficiency and the potential to become an expert in the field.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Generate highly novel ideas, evaluate them, plan, and be involved in their execution and implementation.
  2. Disseminate, externally and internally, the results of such activities through publications, patent disclosures, seminar participation, internal documentation, etc.
  3. Represent IBM at professional meetings, in professional societies, and universities.
  4. Keep technically abreast of the literature and progress within the specific and related areas of expertise.
  5. Assume additional responsibilites as assigned.
